Featuring Equipment Reviews on Guns, Gear, Supplies, and More

Do you remember playing Army or cops & robbers as a kid? The adrenalin rush of getting caught in a shootout, whether powered by caps, a yelled "Bang!", or even silence?

In recent years, a whole new sport has emerged. Paintball has become the sport of choice for millions of enthusiasts around the world.

For those who don't know, paintball is a realistic war game of sorts, where there are strategies, objectives, battles, hiding behind trees, you name it. The "shooting", as the name implies, is done with small paintball pellets fired from CO2 or other air-pressure "guns". Participants wear protective gear, such as thick, padded clothing, helmets, and goggles.

Paintball is usually played outdoors, in large fields with partially wooded areas. Recently, some indoor paintball parks have begun operations. Paintball can be played informally, with just a few friends getting together, or as a very coordinated, strategic game involving hundreds of people divided into teams.

Originally, paintball guns were developed for and used by forestry and agricultural industries, to mark trees and livestock. In 1985, the Splatmaster was patented. This was the first paintball gun with a specially modified reduced paintball velocity so that the impact wouldn't harm humans. Over the years, paintball guns have evolved, and are much lighter and smaller than the original models.

Many organized paintball "wars" aren't for the amateur hobby player. Many enthusiasts take their sport very seriously, and aren't receptive to having newer, inexperienced players on their team. For this reason, look around to find players at your own skill level as you learn.
